Romantic getaways perfect for Valentine's Day

The origins of Valentine's Day may remain up for debate, but one thing is for certain and that's the fact that many of us love to take holidays to romantic destination with the people we love. With this in mind, we've rounded up a selection of our tours that are ideal for the lovers among us...

1) Truffles

There's nothing quite like unearthing a fresh truffle from the ground and then savouring it grated onto a bowl of steaming pasta for lunch. For centuries, truffles have been considered as an aphrodisiac and they were used for medicinal purposes by the Greeks and Romans alike. Join us in Italy to indulge in this heady delicacy.

2) Chocolate

Another historic aphrodisiac, chocolate is closely associated with romance. Given as a gift on Valentine's Day, join us in sun-soaked Sicily to taste a new kind of cacao-based treat. Modica chocolate is still made to ancient Aztec methods, which came to Italy under the Spanish occupation.

3) Almonds

An ancient symbol of fertility, almonds are perhaps a surprising inclusion on our list. This nut is often given as wedding favours and in Italy, you'll likely find five almonds in a package to symbolise health, happiness, wealth, fertility and a long life.

4) Tuscany

A popular destination among newlyweds and couples alike, Tuscany is well worth a visit and gloriously romantic to boot. Rolling hills, neat rows of cypress trees and olive groves lead the way to vineyards that produce world-class wines as well as amazing restaurants.

5) Cheese

Many of us profess an addiction to cheese, but there is scientific research to back it up. An ingredient in cheese called casein releases opiates called casomorphins. We also experience a rush of dopamine that makes us feel great when we consume it. In Piedmont, sample the great Castelmagno.
