Calling all chocolate lovers...

In this, the age of social media, there is a day to celebrate just about anything you could possibly think of. This week, on January 10th, it was Bittersweet Chocolate Day and we couldn’t pass this opportunity to tell you about two of our upcoming Italian Food Holidays that shine a spotlight on this delicious – and often surprising – treat.

Book a place on our 8-day Almonds, Pistachios & Aztec Chocolate tour of South-East Sicily for £2,999pp and you will be amazed by the history and heritage that surrounds the amazing Modica chocolate produced here. Still made in the exact same way as the Aztecs produced it at the time of the Spanish conquistadors, this ancient delicacy is much treasured. It is created using a ‘cold pressing’ method, which involves cocoa beans being crushed on a stone to achieve a grainy texture. The final appearance of this unusual chocolate is rougher than what we are used to today, and it is flavoured only with natural ingredients – such as vanilla or cinnamon.

If you like your chocolate a little sweeter, we would recommend a visit to Turin. Our 8-day Truffles, Cheese & Chocolate in Piedmont tour*, departing in October for £3,249pp, will include an indulgent chocolate tasting. This part of Italy was first granted a licence to produce chocolate in 1678 and people from Switzerland were so impressed by what was being made in Turin that they would cross the border to learn the techniques and recipes for themselves. Think the hazelnut-infused Gianduiotto and the sumptuous regional hot drink of Bicerin – made with espresso, drinking chocolate and milk (pictured below)…
