2 September 2019: Itinerary

We fly from London to Rome and transfer by private bus to our hotel, the Relais Canalicchio. Set in rolling countryside overlooking olive groves and vineyards, this castle-like hotel has a romantic appeal. It presents a typical picture of Umbria and is the perfect place to absorb the history, beauty and atmosphere of this extraordinary region. There will be a group dinner this evening to allow us time to get to know our fellow singers.

Meals include: Dinner

Hotel: Relais il Canalicchio, Canalicchio

Well-rested and also inspired by our stunning surroundings, we begin the day with a group singing session at the hotel. After a light lunch, we will stretch the vocal cords a little more, and then it's time for some indulgent relaxation – this is a holiday, after all!

The abiding image of Umbria is the hilltop medieval town, and we visit one of the best examples today – Todi. The traditional stone houses, grand palazzi and church towers clinging to the hillside high above wildflower meadows and grape vines make for an enchanting visit. Following a singing session in the morning and a light lunch later, there is time at leisure available this afternoon to explore its narrow, characterful medieval streets for yourself.

The tiny city of Orvieto is another hilltop jewel, with a spectacular 14th century cathedral, excellent museums and a network of ancient catacombs that date back to Etruscan times. This rich history is brought to life on our visit, and there is time to wander the city’s centuries-old streets, where we can experience the hustle and bustle of the weekly market. A light lunch is provided at a local wine cellar and a singing session follows in the afternoon.

A more leisurely day awaits us and we begin with a morning singing session in Canalicchio. After lunch, the remainder of the day is at leisure to make your own explorations or, instead, you can simply sit back and unwind in the glorious surroundings of our hotel.

A short drive takes us to the atmospheric fortified town of Monte Castello di Vibio, where we visit the Napoleon-era Teatro della Concordia, a theatre modelled on the grand operatic stages of Europe, but in miniature! With just 99 seats, it is said to be the smallest theatre the world. We hope to be able to sing in this unique location. Then it is on to the minute medieval village of Titignano, offering far-reaching views over breathtaking countryside. After a light lunch, we sing together in this picturesque place.

Back in Canalicchio, we have arranged to meet with a local choir. Following some practice time in the morning and lunch together, we conclude the tour in truly memorable style with a joint performance. Savour a delicious farewell dinner this evening before enjoying one final restful sleep at our hotel.

2 September 2019: Accommodation

Relais Il Canalicchio lies like a small gem inset in the summit of a hill. The picturesque town is built around the Castello di Poggio, which dates to the 10th-11th centuries and is close to the vineyards and olive groves at the centre of the lush Umbrian countryside.

The luxury hotel has almost completely remodelled and enclosed the town of Canalicchio, where only the twittering of birds interrupts the relaxing stillness. It still has its castle-like structure and boasts a large millstone, the old press and some lovely arches.
