Ischia Singing

8 days From £1,995

3 May 2019

The beautiful island of Ischia is steeped in legend. Here, according to Greek myth, Zeus imprisoned the 100-headed, fire-breathing monster Typhon, and the Romans built baths upon the hot springs said to be Typhon’s tears. A favourite destination of the glamorous 1950s jet-set – film stars, writers and artists – Ischia is something of a best-kept secret today, overshadowed by its Bay of Naples neighbour Capri but just as beautiful, fascinating and inspiring. Add your own harmony to this enchanting island, singing in a variety of locations, and enjoy other holiday delights from garden visits to wine tasting and cookery demonstrations. Enough to make the heart sing!

3 May 2019: Itinerary

Wr fly from London to Naples and take a ferry onwards to Ischia, following in the wake of Laurence Olivier, Maria Callas, Sir William Walton, WH Auden and myriad other international luminaries who loved this island or at some point called it home. Upon arrival, we transfer to our hotel where there will be time to get to know our fellow singers and enjoy a group dinner together.

Meals include: Dinner

Hotel: Aragona Palace Hotel & Spa, Ischia

At the beautiful Villa Ravino, we enjoy our first singing session under the instruction of our professional singing tutor. A splendid garden also awaits our discovery here, where peacocks, goats and wild ponies roam freely amongst a vast collection of cacti from around the world. Lunch is also provided in this delightful setting.

Atop a tiny volcanic island linked to Ischia by a causeway, stands the imposing, medieval Aragonese Castle. This redoubt makes for an enthralling visit, as does the nearby Michelangelo’s Tower, a 15th century palace that overlooks the castle from the main island. Here, according to legend, the great artist lived and engaged in a platonic love affair with a local poetess. Thus inspired, we return to our hotel for an afternoon of mesmeric group singing.

The prolific 20th century composer Sir William Walton lived with his wife Susan on Ischia at the estate of La Mortella. Lady Walton’s idyllic subtropical Mediterranean gardens, designed by renowned architect Russell Page to encompass the natural volcanic features, are truly unforgettable – and we visit them, inviting you to discover fragrant blooms, colourful birdlife, a host of exotic plants and trees, and fine views over the town of Forio. We then continue to a local vineyard for lunch, where a sumptuous tasting experience awaits, and then we can enjoy a singing session later in the afternoon.

Borgo Sant’Angelo is one of the great scenic treasures of Ischia, a quaint fishing village in two parts, separated by a narrow isthmus. The pastel-coloured houses, sheltered bays, thermal gardens, and soft sands are a wonder to explore, and there is free time on offer today so that we can fully appreciate the area's sublime beauty and excellent shops, along with bars and delicious restaurants.

Picturesque Forio is Ischia’s second largest town, boasting pretty churches (such as the startlingly white and exceedingly photogenic Chiesa del Soccorso), rocky coastlines and characterful shops. At the friendly Villa Mafalda pension-hotel, we meet up with a local choir who will join us for a rousing vocal performance.

Returning to the Villa Mafalda in Forio, the chef – who is also the owner – and his wife will demonstrate how to prepare some of the traditional dishes of Ischia, an island particularly noted for its fresh rabbit stew and delicious, refreshing limoncello. In the afternoon, there is a further opportunity to sing before we make our way back to our hotel for a memorable farewell dinner.
