5 October 2019

The Cinque Terre National Park offers spectacular views of five small, colourful towns that cling to the dramatic coastline. Each of the towns have their own identity, easily accessible by a regular train service that travels along the coast. Staying at the Hotel Adriana in Monterosso, a former nunnery set in beautiful grounds with tall palm trees, it overlooks a magnificent valley and is just a few minutes’ walk away from the beach.

Italy's gorgeous Cinque Terre is perfect for colourful architecture and seascape painting. For walkers, the terrain is high hillwalking along well defined pathways with spectacular views.

5 October 2019: Itinerary

We catch a flight from London to Pisa airport. Upon arrival, we transfer by private minivan to our hotel in Monterosso and there will be time to get to know our fellow painters.

Meals include: Dinner

Hotel: Hotel Adriana, Monterosso

The morning begins with a relaxing painting session at our hotel. Under the guidance of our expert tutor, we can capture the sights on canvas in likeminded company. In the afternoon, there will be a chance to paint in Monterosso itself, which is famous for its beach and the largest of the five costal villages known as the Cinque Terre. This town's most striking feature, however, is the Monterosso Giant – a 14-metre high sculpture of King Neptune that juts out dramatically from the cliff face.

A short train ride will take us to Vernazza, a small picture-postcard fishing port in the province of La Spezia. To get the most idyllic views, we will stop to paint from a spot high up. From this vista, we will be able to look down towards Vernazza's tiny harbour with its beach, tightly hugged by the church and surrounding town. The castle is particularly striking and imposes its presence from high above.

Another short train ride takes us to Corniglia. On top of a promontory, Corniglia is the most rural of the Cinque Terre villages, surrounded by vineyards and terraces, which broadens both our artistic horizons and our palette. This is the only town of the Cinque Terre not to have access from the sea, but it is connected to the other villages by well-kept footpaths.

Today we enjoy some well-deserved free time. There are many things to do in this glorious part of Italy. Why not take a train to visit charming places nearby, such as Genoa or Portofino, or make a point of soaking up the sun and simply relaxing at the hotel. Or, for those dedicated artists among us, use this leisure time to exercise your creativity independently.

A train ride to Manarola, the oldest of the Cinque Terre towns, awaits us this morning. Cheerily painted, steeply terraced houses have long provided inspiration to artists here. Built on a rock around 70-metres above sea level, this is one of the most romantic Cinque Terre villages. Later in the day, we will be treated to an indulgent wine tasting experience over lunch, where we will get to sample the local Sciacchetrá wine – a sweet wine ordinarily paired with desserts or cheese.

We stay in Monterosso for a final painting session and then there is free time later for shopping or relaxing. We meet up again at our hotel for a light lunch, and then tonight we can enjoy a farewell aperitif and evening meal together.
