In the Maltese archipelago we find the island of Gozo, where ancient settlements date back thousands of years. With so much appeal there is little wonder why so many people have made this coast of the turquoise Mediterranean sea their home.
We arrive and seek to fill this tranquil haven with the sounds of harmonies and acapellas just as the choirs once did that used to fill the beautiful Baroque churches across the island.
Shrouded in mystery this little island also has some big secrets of a hidden past not so easily explained by history records. Gozo is believed to have been the lair of Calypso, where she held Odysseus captive and enchanted him with her singing for seven years. We might not have seven years here, but over seven days we have our chance to make our own mystic melodies.
We fly to Malta this morning, and, following an independent lunch, transfer to Gozo by ferry. After checking in to our hotel in Xlendi village, we spend this evening wining and dining with the group.
A gentle morning walk acts as an introduction to this charming island. At lunchtime we warm up our vocal chords in Xlendi, and spend the rest of our day discovering the secrets of the village.
This morning is all about singing. Following lunch we treat ourselves with a well-earned trip to a nearby olive farm, where we also have a go at baking some delicious local bread.
After another jubilant singing session we make our way to Victoria, or Rabat, the capital city of Gozo, which has been settled since the Neolithic era. We stop for lunch here before indulging in a sensuous afternoon of wine tasting.
Enjoy an entirely free day today – yours to use however you wish. Whether you choose to read in the shade, roam the cliffs of Xlendi, or even dive in local waters, there are sure to be plenty of stories to share over dinner and drinks this evening.
Our final full day brings us to Hondoq, a location of open countryside, and crystal clear waters. Later we celebrate our last night with a farewell meal together.
We transfer to Malta and make our return journey home.
Xlendi (‘shlen-dee’), is a charming little harbour set at the head of a deep, calm inlet. Popular with both swimmers and snorkellers alike due to its reef formations and wonderful waters, this enchanting part of Gozo is bustling with great bars, restaurants and hotels.
